• Mercedes-Benz South Africa empowers young girls during Women’s Month at the Business Women’s Association (BWA) Regional Awards Winners brunch.
East London – In honour of Women’s Month, 20 young girl learners from Sakhikamva, Wongalethu, Nyameko, Uviwe, Mzomhle, and John Bisseker Senior Secondary Schools attended the Regional Business Woman of the Year Awards (RBWOYA) Winners brunch hosted by the Business Women’s Association(BWA) East London on Saturday, 18 August 2018.

‘’The BWA, East London branch creates an opportunity every year for the Regional Business Woman of the Year Award (RBWOYA) winners to share their journey to success at a brunch with our sponsors and guests. This year’s winners’ stories inspired and motivated the attendees to ‘never give up, pursue their dreams and hold on to their values’. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity created by Mercedes-Benz, our Diamond Partner, to share this day with their STEP schools. It bodes well with the BWAs vision to reach out to the Business Leaders of Tomorrow.’’ -Ruth Troskie, Chairperson of BWA East London.

The learners form part of Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s School Transformation and Empowerment Programme (STEP) programme, a key pillar of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility focus. The objective of STEP is to deliver improved quality of teaching, effective learning, pass rates and ultimately, successful matriculants. Through various interventions, the STEP programmes aims to equip more learners to continue their studies successfully at tertiary institutions, especially in the subjects of mathematics, science and accounting.

The attendance of the 20 young girl learners at the BWA brunch was intended to provide a platform to exposure to networking, knowledge-sharing and gleaning insights from some of the most inspirational stories of successful women in business in the Eastern Cape.

Commenting on this event, student Zoliswa Rala, one of the young learners, from Nyameko Senior Secondary School said. “The BWA event gave me the confidence to dream big, personally and professionally. It was truly inspirational and hearing the stories from the winners really got me excited about my potential as a young business woman from East London.”

“We have a responsibility towards our communities and our employees. We are therefore elated that the learners could join the BWA winners at the brunch. There is great value in exposing our project beneficiaries to topics that will help shape their futures. We are very proud to be associated with the BWA and the inspirational stories of individuals in our community. As our slogan says, we do not only build cars, we build communities too. So, it is important that we support this platform and continue to be inspired by the different stories that shape us and drive us to make a difference,” enthused Feliciano Janneker, Manager for Stakeholder Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility at Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) has been a proud sponsor of the Business Women’s Association (BWA) Regional Business Woman of the Year Awards (RBWOYA) for the past two years.
